Here are some alarming facts surrounding gaslighting and domestic abuse within the UK:
According to the Crime Survey for England and Wales year ending March 2019, an estimated 5.7% of adults (2.4 million) experienced domestic abuse in the last year.
Of these, 746,219 were recorded as domestic abuse-related crimes, an increase of 24% from the previous year.
In the UK 1 in 3 woman will experience domestic abuse and while gaslighting does affect men too, the numbers clearly show that it is a more prevalent women's issue.
One study of 96 cases of domestic abuse recorded by the police found that men are significantly more likely to be repeat perpetrators and significantly more likely than women to use physical violence, threats, and harassment.
Over 80% (83%) of high frequency victims (more than 10 crimes) are women. (From a study of data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales
Campaigners are warning that fewer woman and survivors are reporting domestic abuse to the police, meaning we need to start taking gaslighting and other deceptive forms of emotional abuse a lot more seriously.
I am hoping to speak to a member of the CRI Domestic Abuse Project to discuss how we can encourage more woman to open up about their experience of domestic abuse
